Private-property tows in Riverside: the charge limit RPD points to
Riverside is one of the few California cities where the police department spells out a dollar ceiling for private tows.

What RPD says
RPD's Private Property Tow FAQ says a person towed from private property has the right to pay no more than the maximum towing and storage charges listed in Municipal Code section 5.15.080. Only one day of storage may be charged in the first 24 hours, and payment may be made in cash or by bank credit card.

The rates in section 5.15.080
- Standard tow: $252 an hour, portal to portal.
- Outside storage: $54 a day; inside storage: $58 a day.
- After-hours or weekend gate fee: $126.
- Dollies: $49.
If you were overcharged
The same RPD FAQ says a towing employee who overcharges may be guilty of a misdemeanor and the company may be civilly liable for four times the amount charged.
