Rules for Riverside's official police tow companies, and how to complain

Companies that tow for RPD sign an official police tow service agreement under Chapter 5.15 of the Municipal Code.

General information, not legal advice. The papers you got from the police, the tow company, the storage lot or a state agency control your dates. Agencies change phone numbers and steps, so check the agency's own page too.

Hours, location and posted rates

The business office must be within 150 feet of the storage yard and open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with 24-hour phone service. The yard must be within one driving mile of the city limits, and the approved rate schedule must be posted.

Evidence holds

While RPD keeps a car in 'evidence-stored' status, the owner is not charged the section 5.15.080 fees. Charges can start only after RPD removes that status.

Complaints

Complaints about discourtesy, overcharging, mishandling cars or breaking the law are reviewed by the Traffic Bureau's administrative sergeant. The company gets ten business days to respond, and both sides are told the result. A founded complaint can lead to suspension or cancellation of the company's agreement.
