Asking for a tow hearing in Nueces County

Texas law gives the owner or operator of a vehicle towed without consent the right to a hearing in justice court. In Corpus Christi that means a Nueces County justice court.

General information, not legal advice. The papers you got from the police, the tow company, the storage lot or a state agency control your dates. Agencies change phone numbers and steps, so check the agency's own page too.

Where and when

The hearing can be in any justice court in the county the vehicle was towed from. The written request must reach the court before the 14th day after the tow, not counting Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays. If the required notice of hearing rights was never given, that deadline does not apply. The court holds the hearing within 21 days after it gets the request.

The fee

Nueces County's Justice of the Peace fee schedule, effective January 1, 2024, lists a Towing Hearing Fee of $54. An older 2017 page that is still online lists $20. Payment methods differ by court; the schedule says one precinct takes only money orders or cashier's checks.
