Booting in Austin

Austin has regulated private booting since 2018, after the state stopped licensing boot companies. The City also boots cars with unpaid tickets.

General information, not legal advice. The papers you got from the police, the tow company, the storage lot or a state agency control your dates. Agencies change phone numbers and steps, so check the agency's own page too.

Private booting on parking lots

Only a City-licensed booting company may boot, and only on a parking lot with the owner's authorization and compliant signs. The removal fee is capped at $100, the boot must come off within one hour of your call or the fee is waived, and you must get a receipt that states your hearing rights.

City boots for unpaid tickets

Vehicles with three or more unpaid parking tickets can be booted or towed by the City; a ticket can be contested within 20 business days. A May 2025 City memo said 36 boot notices had been issued since 2022.
